“I swear, Georgie. Sometimes your dad is a little psycho.”

Georgia laughed heartily, pressing her hand against her chest as she did so.

“I know. You saw him when I came home drunk. He goes a little nuts sometimes. Why? Did you get drunk? What’d he do?”

How could I explain to her how the last week had been? How could I tell my best friend that her dad and I had been together, but then I was going on a date with another guy that her dad said was just fine, but now he wouldn’t even look at me or talk to me unless he had something important to say about where he’d be or what he was doing that affected me.

I finally settled on, “he’s just so...hot and cold.”

She nodded.

“I know. He’s always been like that. Dad does this weird octopus thing where he just sucks up into himself when he’s uncomfortable or stressed.”

The little sucky noise she made while describing the octopus thing made me laugh, but her words rang true.

“So he’s stressed?” I asked.

“Or uncomfortable. I’m sure with me leaving there have been plenty of moments where he gets all weird living with a virtual stranger. But he’s fine. Dad’s always fine.”

But we weren’t strangers.

And he wasn’t always fine.

“He misses you,” I said eventually and she rolled her eyes.

“I couldn’t live there anymore, Bay. He’s so controlling and...”

“What do you mean controlling?” I asked. “He only wanted to know where you’d be and when to expect you home.”

“Like a boyfriend,” she said, wrinkling up her nose. “I’m an adult now. I shouldn’t have to answer to anyone.”

“No. He’s acting like a dad. My dad did the same before I came out here. If I still lived at home, he’d ask those same questions. And that’s not being unreasonable, Georgie. Blake cares about you. He wants to know about you and that you're safe.”

She just shrugged again.

“That’s also why I haven’t told him about Jay.”

“What, that you’re still dating him?” I asked. “Didn’t you promise?”

“Yeah, well...” She fussed with her chipping nail polish for a moment before her eyes brightened up. “Oh yeah! I forgot to show you this!”

She pulled out her phone and took a moment scrolling through it before handing it to me.

“That was us at his family’s barbecue. It was pretty cool, and they’re all really chill.”

I looked up at her in shock.

“You met his family and haven’t even told Blake you’re dating him?”

She shrugged again.

“If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were on his side,” she said with a snotty tinge to her voice. “You’re my best friend. You’re supposed to be happy for me.”

But I also cared for Blake, and he deserved better than how she was treating him.

“You should tell him,” I whispered before adding, “But it looks like you had fun. I’m glad you all got along.”

She shrugged one last time before throwing a grocery bag at me and holding her hand out.

“I got the chocolate, you brought a movie, right?”

I dug through my bag before handing over a classic.
