âI swear, Georgie. Sometimes your dad is a little psycho.â
Georgia laughed heartily, pressing her hand against her chest as she did so.
âI know. You saw him when I came home drunk. He goes a little nuts sometimes. Why? Did you get drunk? Whatâd he do?â
How could I explain to her how the last week had been? How could I tell my best friend that her dad and I had been together, but then I was going on a date with another guy that her dad said was just fine, but now he wouldnât even look at me or talk to me unless he had something important to say about where heâd be or what he was doing that affected me.
I finally settled on, âheâs just so...hot and cold.â
She nodded.
âI know. Heâs always been like that. Dad does this weird octopus thing where he just sucks up into himself when heâs uncomfortable or stressed.â
The little sucky noise she made while describing the octopus thing made me laugh, but her words rang true.
âSo heâs stressed?â I asked.
âOr uncomfortable. Iâm sure with me leaving there have been plenty of moments where he gets all weird living with a virtual stranger. But heâs fine. Dadâs always fine.â
But we werenât strangers.
And he wasnât always fine.
âHe misses you,â I said eventually and she rolled her eyes.
âI couldnât live there anymore, Bay. Heâs so controlling and...â
âWhat do you mean controlling?â I asked. âHe only wanted to know where youâd be and when to expect you home.â
âLike a boyfriend,â she said, wrinkling up her nose. âIâm an adult now. I shouldnât have to answer to anyone.â
âNo. Heâs acting like a dad. My dad did the same before I came out here. If I still lived at home, heâd ask those same questions. And thatâs not being unreasonable, Georgie. Blake cares about you. He wants to know about you and that you're safe.â
She just shrugged again.
âThatâs also why I havenât told him about Jay.â
âWhat, that youâre still dating him?â I asked. âDidnât you promise?â
âYeah, well...â She fussed with her chipping nail polish for a moment before her eyes brightened up. âOh yeah! I forgot to show you this!â
She pulled out her phone and took a moment scrolling through it before handing it to me.
âThat was us at his familyâs barbecue. It was pretty cool, and theyâre all really chill.â
I looked up at her in shock.
âYou met his family and havenât even told Blake youâre dating him?â
She shrugged again.
âIf I didnât know better, Iâd think you were on his side,â she said with a snotty tinge to her voice. âYouâre my best friend. Youâre supposed to be happy for me.â
But I also cared for Blake, and he deserved better than how she was treating him.
âYou should tell him,â I whispered before adding, âBut it looks like you had fun. Iâm glad you all got along.â
She shrugged one last time before throwing a grocery bag at me and holding her hand out.
âI got the chocolate, you brought a movie, right?â
I dug through my bag before handing over a classic.
